Dealing with Carpal Tunnel through Chiropractic Treatments and Good Nutrition
Posted by: | CommentsWe’re kicking off a series on knowledge worker issues. We’ll cover carpal tunnel, stiff necks, low back pain, and any others than come to mind. You can add a comment below or send us a comment online to make a suggestion.
If you have carpal tunnel, hopefully you’ve visited your doctor or chiropractor to help alleviate the pain. Common treatments for carpal tunnel include manipulation of the wrist, elbow, and upper spine.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center, two studies involving chiropractic treatment for carpal tunnel have produced positive results*.
In the first study, 25 individuals with carpal tunnel syndrome reported significant improvements after receiving chiropractic treatment. They measured better in the areas of strength, range of motion, and pain. Most of these improvements were maintained for at least 6 months.
A second study looked at 91 people with carpal tunnel syndrome and compared the effects of chiropractic care versus conservative medical care (wrist supports and ibuprofen). Both groups experienced significant improvement in nerve function, finger sensation, and comfort.
If you haven’t sought medical treatment for your carpal tunnel syndrome, now is as good a time as ever. But did you know there are steps you can take to be an active part of your treatment, too? Taking care of yourself involves pinpointing the problem then making a conscience decision to do your part to help the healing. In this case, eating the right kinds of foods to help reduce symptoms—and avoiding those known to cause flair-ups—is a great start.
That means saying bye-bye (or at least lowering your intake) to…
- red meats
- white foods (white bread, pasta, and sugar)
- trans fatty acids
- coffee and other stimulants, alcohol, and tobacco
And hello to…
- foods high in B-vitamins and iron (whole grains, dark leafy greens such as spinach and kale)
- antioxidant-rich foods (blueberries, cherries, tomatoes, squash, and bell peppers)
- more lean meats and cold water fish
- olive oil and other healthy oils
